Accelerate to Equal: Engaging Women in Vector Control

Women’s role in combatting vector-borne disease threats is often overlooked.  Women hold unique positions as primary caretakers and social mobilizers, both within their households and broader communities, which may be leveraged to improve uptake and sustainability of vector control strategies. In addition, engaging women in vector control provides opportunities to increase their role as decision-makers and leaders, enhancing their agency and potentially improving their economic independence through employment or micro-enterprises.

This Keystone Symposia virtual event will discuss various aspects of women as valuable agents in vector-control initiatives, in the context of the global malaria epidemic:

Women as assets in vector control

Why are women uniquely positioned to carry out vector control activities in their households, communities and in leadership positions?

Barriers to women’s engagement

What are the primary reasons why women have been under-represented in vector control efforts, and what are the cultural, social and structural barriers to their participation?

The Accelerate to Equal initiative

How can we better promote women’s roles in vector control at all levels, household, community and professional, in a way that is beneficial to women, their families, and the community?

Community engagement

How can government, industry, academia, non-profits and other organizations support these efforts to ensure that women are included in vector control programs?
