Andrea L. Hevener PhD

University of California, Los Angeles

Dr. Hevener’s laboratory studies the transcriptional regulation of metabolism and insulin action with a specific focus on the impact of hormone responsive nuclear receptors (for example the estrogen receptor alpha, ERa), on mitochondrial function in metabolic tissues. Findings from the Hevener laboratory suggest a conserved action of ERa to control the architecture, overall health, and function of mitochondria, and these ERa-mediated effects may underlie, at least in part, the protective role of estradiol and its primary receptor ERa in combating chronic diseases associated with metabolic dysfunction. The overarching clinical goal of Dr. Hevener’s research is to develop novel strategies targeting ERa to enhance mitochondrial metabolism and combat metabolic-related diseases.

Dr. Hevener is the Associate Director for Research of the Iris Cantor-UCLA Women’s Health Center and an executive committee member of the NIH-sponsored UCSD-UCLA Diabetes Research Center, as well as Director of its Metabolic and Molecular Physiology Core. Dr. Hevener’s laboratory is supported by the National Institutes of Health, UCLA Department of Medicine, the STOP CANCER Foundation I.C.O.N. Award, the UCLA CTSI and the Iris Cantor Women’s Health Executive Advisory Board.
