Andrew B. Ward PhD

The Scripps Research Institute

Dr. Andrew Ward has been at The Scripps Research Institute since 2001 where he obtained his Ph.D. and conducted his postdoctoral work in structural biology and biophysics. He has been a member of the faculty since 2010 and leads a lab that is primarily focused on immunotherapeutic and vaccine development to combat viral pathogens such as HIV, influenza, SARS, MERS, Ebola, and hepatitis C viruses. The Ward lab uses electron microscopy as its primary research tool in order to image viral glycoproteins in complex with neutralizing antibodies. These pictures are then used to improve antibody-based therapies and rationally design vaccines. The Ward lab has published extensively on the HIV envelope glycoprotein, including the first high-resolution structure by cryo-electron microscopy. In 2013 Dr. Ward was awarded the Ray Thomas Edwards Foundation Fellowship, in 2014 he was recognized with the Palmenberg Junior Investigator Award by the American Society for Virology, and in 2017 was awarded the Viruses Young Investigator Prize in Virology.
