Burning Questions: The Role of Inflammation in Disease

Roughly 2,000 years ago, the Roman Celsus first recorded the cardinal signs of inflammation as “calor” (warmth), “dolor” (pain), “tumor” (swelling), and “rubor” (redness) in his work De Medicina. Today, our understanding of inflammation has moved considerably beyond its outward manifestations. Inflammation is a complex multi-systemic process that is necessary for key mechanisms such as fighting infection and wound healing, but it also causes or contributes to many debilitating conditions.
