Alina Baciu MPH, PhD

Alina B. Baciu, MPH, PhD, is a senior program officer in the Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice in the Health and Medicine Division of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. After earning her master’s degree in public health (International Health) in 1996 from Loma Linda University School of Public Health, Alina spent one year as training coordinator on a USAID-funded maternal and child health project in Zambia. From 1997 to 2000, she worked at the Orange County (California) Health Care Agency, and later the Public Health Agency as a health educator in the Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health. At the National Academies since 2001, Alina staffed or directed several Institute of Medicine consensus studies including those that produced the reports The Future of the Public’s Health in the 21^st Century (2003), The Smallpox Vaccination Program: Public Health in an Age of Terrorism (2005), and The Future of Drug Safety: Promoting and Protecting the Health of the Public (2007). Alina was the study director on the 2010-2012 For the Public’s Health reports on measurement, law, and funding, and also directed the study that produced the report Toward Quality Measures for Population Health and the Leading Health Indicators. She currently directs the activities of the Roundtable on Population Health Improvement. In 2010, Alina received a Ph.D. in Human Sciences (an interdisciplinary program in language, culture and society) from The George Washington University. In 2015, Alina received the Cecil Medal, the highest distinction for Institute of Medicine staff.
