Dmitrii Shek graduated from medical school (MD) in 2016. He completed his basic physician training in 2018 and masters by research (MRes) in 2020. Currently a PhD student at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research under the supervision of Professor Golo Ahlenstiel, Dr Scott Read and Dr Bo Gao. The project aims to determine clinical/biological risk factors of immune-checkpoint inhibitors toxicity with particular focus on non-coding RNA. Ideally, we wish to establish risk factors, their mechanisms and to identify potential therapeutic targets which may interfere with revealed risk factors thus promoting safety outcomes of cancer immunotherapy.
Furthermore, works on collection and analysis of research samples obtained from COVID-19 patients enrolled to clinical trials at Blacktown/Westmead Hospitals at Sydney, New South Wales, Australia: (1) COSIN study (NCT04383652); (2) CORIA study (NCT04354818). The particular focus is to elaborate patterns of COVID-19 disease among cancer patients treated with immune-checkpoint inhibitors.
Finally, besides pursuing clinical and academic career in oncology, he is an active soccer, ice hockey player and a WWF volunteer.
