Panelists:

  • Rachel L. Batterham, MD, University College London
  • Vicki Mooney, ECPO Executive Director & Patient
  • Francesco Rubino, MD, King's College London
  • Joseph Nadglowski, BS, Obesity Action Coalition

This ePanel explores how stigmas impede progress against obesity by putting the blame on the patient, and overlooking genetic, molecular, hormonal and metabolic factors that cannot be overcome by willpower and behavioral interventions alone. Panelists discuss how shame and societal judgement hold patients back from seeking treatment for the disease and fuels failure, as well as how patients, doctors and scientists can reframe the conversation to support patients and help them succeed.
