Tuberculosis and HIV co-infection among patients admitted at Diagnosis of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Reference Center of Laayoune, Morocco

Aims of the work:
Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant contributor to mortality in HIV-infected patients. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and epidemiological profile of TB/HIV co-infection, among patients admitted at Diagnosis of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Reference Center (CDTMR) of Laayoune, Morocco.
Methods:
We conducted a retrospective study of patients registered in Diagnosis of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Reference Center (CDTMR) of Laayoune, between January 2017 and April 2018. We analyzed epidemiological profile and treatment completion from medical case records of all patients.
Results:
HIV status was known for 46/223 patients, 36 were HIV seronegative and 10 were HIV seropositive. 60% of seopositive patients were males and 40% of them were females, 50% of patients were smokers. Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) was present in 80% patients, 20% had extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB). Of patients with EPTB, common sites of infection included lymphatic and meningeal. Only 40 % of patients were on antiretroviral therapy (ART)
Conclusion:
It is recommended to emphasize on the provision of HIV counselling and testing to all TB patients to ensure proper management and timely initiation of ART in TB-HIV co-infected patients in order to improve the outcome and reduce mortality.
