Abstract
Mitochondria control both the life and death of a cell. Mitophagy, a selective process that removes damaged or unwanted mitochondria, is critical for the maintenance of mitochondrial quality and quantity. Previously, we have revealed that FUNDC1, a mitochondrial outer-membrane protein, functions as a mitophagy receptor to mediate hypoxia-induced mitophagy. FUNDC1 harbors an LC-3 -interacting region (LIR) and interacts with LC-3 to mediate mitophagy both in cultured cell systems and in (patho-)physiological settings. Our recent results showed that FUNDC1 is involved in the cold induced mitophagy and contributes to adaptive thermogenesis. We suggest a new mechanism of how mitophagy is coupled with mitochondrial biogenesis, thus governing the overall mitochondrial abundance, quality and turnover.
