Deciphering the cellular and molecular interactions that drive disease within the tissue microenvironment holds promise for discovering drug targets of the future. In order to recapitulate the in vivo interactions through molecular analysis, one must be able to analyse specific cell populations from within a heterogeneous population. Laser capture microdissection (LCM) allows the isolation of specific cells from thin tissue sections or from monolayer cultured cellswith high spatial resolution by direct microscopic visualization. Coupled with standard genomic and proteomic methods, LCM has the capacity to revolutionize the molecular analysis of complex tissues.
